Support for transition stress to help the resident adjust to the temporary stay. Family involvement through visitation and updates on the resident’s overall holistic well-being.

Assistance in documenting personal wishes regarding life-sustaining treatments.

What is Respite Care?

What is Respite Care?

Respite care is a short-term relief service for primary caregivers who look after individuals with disabilities, chronic illnesses, or aging-related conditions. It allows caregivers to take a break while ensuring their loved ones receive proper care in a safe environment.

How long can someone receive Respite Care?

At Mayfield Aged Care we offer overnight or weekend breaks for short-term relief, One to several week breaks for temporary stay and Seasonal or Extended stay to help caregivers during holidays or personal emergencies, allowing their loved one to stay in our facility for a longer period.

How is a Patient Looked After in Respite Care?

Each resident is looked after based on their individual needs, which may include medical, personal, and emotional support. At Mayfield aged care we can provide: 

  • Personal Care & Daily Living Assistance such as help with mobility,  help with mobility (walking, transferring from bed to chair, etc.) & assistance with bathing, dressing, grooming, and toileting.
  •  Medical & Health Monitoring such as medication reminders or administration, assistance with wound care, injections, or other medical needs (if provided by a licensed nurse),  Monitoring for changes in health and well-being & Supervision of chronic conditions (e.g., dementia, diabetes, heart conditions)
  • Emotional & Social Support such as providing companionship to prevent loneliness, Engaging activities such as games, music, and social interaction & Behavioral support for individuals with dementia or cognitive impairments. 
  •  Safety & Security such as 24/7 monitoring in facility-based respite care, Supervision for individuals who are prone to wandering  & Ensuring a safe environment to prevent falls or injuries. 
  •  Specialized Care for Dementia or Disabilities such as memory care programs in specialized facilities, support for individuals with autism or developmental disabilities & assistance with communication for individuals with speech or cognitive impairments

How can I prepare my loved one for Respite Care?

Transitioning a loved one into respite care can be challenging, especially if they are unfamiliar with the environment or resistant to change. Some ways to help make the transition easier are: 

  • Communicate Early and Reassure Them : Talk about respite care in a positive & reassuring way, emphasizing that they will be well cared for and safe. Explain that it is temporary and will help both them and you.
  •  Involve Them in the Planning : At Mayfield Aged Care we encourage you to bring your loved one to the facility together ahead of time to meet staff and see the environment.
  •  Pack Familiar and Comforting Items : Bring your loved ones favorite clothing, blankets, or personal care items. Include photos, books, music, or hobbies to help them feel at home.
  • Provide Detailed Care Instructions : Write down important details like medications, dietary needs, and routines. Include emergency contacts and preferred activities. Let the us know about any special habits or behavioral concerns.
